How to Get Into the Underwater Lab in Rust: A Step-by-Step Guide

Rust’s Underwater Labs are high-risk, high-reward locations that many players aim to conquer—but getting inside is the first big challenge. Whether you're looking for elite loot or just want to explore one of the game's most atmospheric areas, this guide covers everything you need to know to enter these submerged strongholds successfully.

Step 1: Prepare the Right Gear

Before diving in, you’ll need the proper equipment to survive underwater:

  • Diving Tank & Fins: Found in loot or bought for 35 Scrap at Fishing Villages. Fins speed up your swim.
  • Full Diving Set: A mask and wetsuit are useful to extend your dive time.
  • Submarine (Optional): Available for 200–300 Scrap at Fishing Villages. They provide faster, safer travel and access to the lab’s moon pool.

Step 2: Locate the Underwater Lab

Use the in-game map to find underwater lab icons. These labs are scattered across the ocean floor and show up as small, rounded symbols. Once you’ve identified a lab, head toward it using either your swimming gear or a submarine.

Step 3: Choose Your Entry Point

Underwater Labs have two main entry types:

1. Moon Pool Access (Best for Submarines)

  • Red dots appear on your sonar when you're near.
  • Navigate your sub through the large opening into the moon pool.
  • Surface the sub and climb out—there’s a ladder nearby for easy access.

2. Diver Pool (Human-Size Hatch)

  • Swim to the lab and look for a small, vertical shaft.
  • Requires no vehicle—just good breath management.
  • This route is riskier due to shark presence but is often less contested by players.

Step 4: Enter the Lab

Once you're at the lab:

  • Use the ladders or hatches to climb into the structure.
  • Watch out for AI scientists inside. They are heavily armed and will shoot on sight.
  • Make sure your health and weapons are ready before entry.

Tips for a Successful Run

  • Go with a Team: Labs are dangerous, and backup makes a big difference.
  • Bring Healing Items: Medical syringes are essential.
  • Be Stealthy: Labs are PvP hotspots—move carefully and avoid unnecessary noise.

Final Thoughts

Getting into Rust’s Underwater Labs is a challenge, but with the right preparation and knowledge, it’s absolutely doable—and rewarding. From the moment you dive in, the tension, the loot, and the experience make it one of the most memorable parts of the game.
